Second abseil for Epsom & St Helier Hospitals Charity raises over £27,500

Updated: 1 hour ago

On Thursday 18th June, we returned to Epsom and St Helier Hospital’s Charity to deliver a charity abseil at St Helier Hospital.

£27,576 Raised by 70 Supporters

Now in its second year, the event saw 70 brave supporters descend the hospital in aid of the charity, raising an impressive £27,576 between them. That equates to an average of almost £400 per participant - a fantastic result which shows the dedication and generosity of everyone who took part.

Participants were able to choose where they wanted their fundraising to make the biggest impact, supporting a variety of causes across the hospitals. This included doctors raising money to improve their departments, grateful parents giving back to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and members of staff fundraising for patient care improvements within their own teams.

A Fantastic Supporter Experience at St Helier Hospital's Charity Abseil

The atmosphere throughout the day was fantastic, and we've since received some wonderful feedback from those who took part. The charity's Managing Director, who was the first person over the edge, said:

"It was great to be part of it. Thanks so much for all you have done in getting it organised and running so well - it's a great event and fantastic to raise a good amount of money for the charity as well!"

Lisa Clarke, who fundraised for Audiology, is deaf and completed the abseil by lip-reading the instructions. Reflecting on the experience, she said:

"Thank you for this amazing day. I had the best time! Could you please pass on my thanks to the Abseil Team and to Tom who talked me through the Abseil so well. A big well done to you and your team for making this event brilliant."

Fiona conquered her fears as a way to give back to the Dermatology team who helped her daughter - you can hear what she had to say on the charity's website.

Building on Two Years of Success

Alongside the positive feedback from participants, we were hugely pleased to hear from Molly Simpson, Head of Charity at Epsom & St Helier Hospitals Charity:

"In our second year of the Abseil St Helier, we were really proud of what we achieved. It was another fantastic event and raised an incredible amount of money to support our hospitals.

Each year it's a pleasure to work with the team at Big Bang. Andy, Tom, Joe and the team are incredible and we couldn't recommend them enough- in fact we do to other NHS charities all the time.

We receive so many positive comments from participants at how they guide you through the process, keep you calm and explain everything so well and it's this supporter experience that keeps people coming back year on year. Thank you."

Combined with the charity's 2025 fundraising, this latest result brings the total raised through its abseil events to more than £77,500 - a great example of what a height-based fundraising challenge can achieve year after year.

If you're considering a charity abseil for your own organisation, we'd be happy to explore how a similar event could work for your cause.
